I was fired without cause. What are my options?

Return to FAQ Videos

Transcript:

If you feel like you were terminated without cause, you may not have a lot of options, unless you think that the termination was a result of some type of discriminatory conduct, or as a result of your recent complaints in the workplace.

Florida is what we call an at will employer situation. That means that the company doesn’t have to give you a reason or has to have a good reason to terminate you. They don’t violate the law by terminating you. By way of a crazy example, if you’re wearing a blue shirt to work, and they say, ‘I don’t like individuals who wear a blue shirts. You’re terminated.’ That’s not a illegal in the state of Florida. But if you’re the only employee who was terminated for wearing a blue shirt and other individuals of a different sex, religion, or who had disabilities were treated more favorably, you might have a claim for discrimination. You might, also, have a claim for retaliation, which is if you’ve asserted your rights or objected to some type of unlawful conduct in the workplace.

To know for sure, you should consider having a consultation with a competent employment counsel.
