What discriminatory practices are prohibited by the employment discrimination laws?

Return to FAQ Videos

Transcript:

Discrimination is a very unique definition. It’s different than unfair treatment. Under the law, both state and federal, in order to have a claim for discrimination, the employee has to establish that they’re being treated differently because of what’s called a protected characteristic. Protected characteristic is age, race, sex, gender, national origin, disability, pregnancy, something that the laws protect. It’s not unfair treatment. This is a common misconception. In order to find out if you have a discrimination claim, you can contact human resources to report what you view as discrimination or you can contact your local labor and employment law lawyer.
