What is severance pay?

Return to FAQ Videos

Transcript:

Under Florida law, severance is a gift. That means unless you have a contract or something in writing promising that the company you work for is going to pay you after you leave, you’re not entitled to any severance. That’s true, even if you’re terminated without cause or without any reason at all. That doesn’t mean that you can’t try to negotiate for severance on the way out. Often companies do have written policies that allow for the payment of severance.

If you feel like you’ve been a victim of workplace injustice, you might consider hiring a labor and employment lawyer to help negotiate some soft landing for you on the way out.
