Can an employer find out if I was fired for theft?

Return to FAQ Videos

Sometimes certain questions such as your reasons for separation from your former employment may be a question on your application for new employment. It’s always advisable to be truthful on those applications to the extent that if an employer later learns that you were untruthful, that can be grounds in and of itself for termination based on the fact that you were not truthful with regard to your application. In some situations that the employer did opt to press charges, some of those charges may be public record, and the employer may find out anyway if you didn’t disclose it. It’s important to be honest if you did have reason for your termination and to be up-front with your employer, so that they can make a decision as to whether or not they want to hire you given those circumstances.
