Is either the employer or the employee required to give notice of termination?

Return to FAQ Videos

Transcript:

In the state of Florida, we’re what’s called an at-will state. That means that you don’t have to give notice and neither does your employer in a situation of termination. It is absolutely possible that you could come in one day and your employer would say, “Unfortunately, you don’t have a job any more.” Even one-day notice, no notice at all, that would be legal. In that situation though you would absolutely be entitled to unemployment and would want to take a look at the circumstances that led to why a sudden termination. Typically the recommendation is that from the employer perspective, you’d want termination not to be a surprise, to be the type of thing that is someone’s been coached up or eventually coached out.
