What is wage and hour law?

Return to FAQ Videos

Transcript:

Wage and hour law is a body of both state and federal laws that’s intended to protect employees from being paid less than the Florida minimum wage and for overtime. In our state, we actually recently, by way of ballot, passed a minimum wage statute that every year goes up for inflation. It’s important that you can find out if your employer is following that.

Florida actually has a higher minimum wage than the federal required minimum wage. Part of that body of law also requires that every employee get paid for overtime if they work more than 40 hours in a particular work week. Of course, there are exemptions to that, but most commonly, employees get both minimum wage as well as overtime.
